Electro Diagnosis

During the meeting, we reviewed the use of electrodiagnostic techniques in diagnosing and managing neuromuscular and spinal conditions in horses, particularly those affecting gait. We emphasized how these tools can complement imaging methods like CT and MRI, especially when imaging alone doesn’t provide clear answers.

The discussion covered key diagnostic approaches, including electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, and motor evoked potentials, and how these can help pinpoint neuroanatomical lesions and assess muscle health. We also addressed the complexities of interpreting EMG results and the importance of distinguishing between myopathies and neuropathies.

Several case examples were presented, such as myotonic disease and radial nerve paralysis, highlighting the need for patience and long-term strategies in rehabilitation. We also touched on the role of biomarkers, neurophysiological testing, and electrode techniques in evaluating conditions like sensory ataxia and neuropathic pain.

Finally, we discussed how posture can influence nerve transmission and coordination, and we explored some advanced diagnostic methods, including ascending tests for stimulating sensory nerves.
